A traditional Sino-European domino set contains 28 tiles, each divided into two square ends, marked with spots or left blank. Extended sets such as double 9 and double 12 are also available, commonly used in games like Mexican train and Chicken Foot. Each country has its own favorite domino games: England enjoys muggins (All fives), Scandinavian countries play Bergen, Mexico loves Mexican train, and Spain plays Matador.
Originating in Song Dynasty China, dominoes made their way to Italy in the 18th century. The exact evolution from Chinese to modern dominoes remains a mystery.
Here are the general rules of dominoes:
Blocking game: The simplest version for two players uses a double six set. Players draw seven tiles each, and the remainder forms the stock or boneyard. The game starts with one player playing a tile, setting the line of play where tiles must match at the ends. Players take turns adding to this line, aiming to play all their tiles or block the opponent. The game ends when a player goes out or the game is blocked, with the last player to move scoring points based on the opponent's remaining tiles.
Scoring game: Points are earned during gameplay for specific configurations or moves. In muggins (All fives), points are scored when the open ends sum to multiples of five. In Bergen, points come from matching numbers on the open ends. In Mexican train, the double zero tile scores 50 points. Calling "domino" before playing a tile is crucial; failure to do so can result in penalties.
Draw game: Players can draw from the stock before playing a tile, adding strategic depth. The score is calculated from the pips in the losing player's hand and the stock, with typically two tiles left in the stock. This variant is often simply called "dominos."
