Dive into the timeless fun of the classic 29 Card Game (sometimes known as the 28 Card Game due to slight rule variations) wherever and whenever you want! Originating from South Asia, this trick-taking game features the Jack and the Nine as the top cards in each suit, adding a unique twist to every round.
Typically, 29 is enjoyed by four players, divided into fixed partnerships with partners sitting opposite each other. The game uses 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck, comprising eight cards in each of the four "French" suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. The cards rank from high to low as follows: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. Your mission? To capture tricks that hold high-value cards.
The scoring is straightforward:
- Jacks: 3 points each
- Nines: 2 points each
- Aces: 1 point each
- Tens: 1 point each
- Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7): No points
This setup yields a total of 28 points from the cards. Some versions of the game award an extra point for winning the last trick, bringing the total to 29 points, which explains the game's name. However, many modern players opt not to count this extra point, yet the game retains its name, "29."
In traditional play, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives, which are excluded from the 32-card deck, serve as trump indicators. Each player receives a set of these cards, one from each suit. The Sixes are used for keeping score, with each partnership utilizing one red and one black Six.
